Meet Your Commander, Nick Camera:  Nick is the son of a WWII Veteran and VFW Post Commander in River Edge, New Jersey.  Nick is a 21 year veteran of the Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He held many posts throughout his career - mostly in the Air Defense Artillery MOS’s.  He first served as a Vulcan Gun Platoon Leader in Germany. Other positions include serving as an Aide-de-Camp in NATO, a Hawk Missile Commander and Gun and Missile Advisor in Saudi Arabia. He went on to an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Syracuse University, is a graduate of the Command & General Staff College.  He served as the Assistant Inspector General at Air Defense Artillery Center at Fort Bliss. Nick also served as the Public Affairs Officer of the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea.  He finished his Army career Commander of Southern European Broadcasting, a network of the AFRTS, in Vicenza, Italy.

As a civilian, Nick earned a  Master of Arts in Teaching and then taught History and Math in Bradley Beach, New Jersey. With a second Master’s Degree in Education Leadership, he became a vice-Principal and later, Principal of  Defino Central School in Marlboro, NJ.. He retired in 2015.

Nick and his wife Karen moved to Myrtle Beach in April of 2015 and Nick soon became very active in our Post.  He was elected for House Committee in 2015 and later became Chairman.  He took over the post monthly calendar, the Post website, and established a Facebook page and a Google Group email system to keep our members up to date.  Anyone who has been around Post 10804 knows of Nick’s commitment to veterans and are well aware of his involvement and accomplishments in our Post.

The Post Monthly Calendar does an excellent job in letting everyone know what’s happening for the month.  There are ‘special events’/items of information that warrant additional attention and here’s what we have for June :   June 11 - Sunday Brunch, June 14 -Flag Day ceremony, June 16 Friday Night Dinner with Live DJ entertainment (Roast Pork dinner), June 17th - Monthly Meeting, June 23rd - Fish Fry, June 30th - Baked Chicken Dinner.

MEMBERSHIP:  Everyone out there knows a veteran NOT a member of the VFW.  PLEASE make an effort to sign-up one new member for the Post or VFW At Large.  If you don’t want to do this, at least let someone in Post leadership know of an eligible veteranso they  can try and recruit them.

We had a very good Memorial Day Service at the N Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.  This is a joint-event with American Legion Post 186.  We would like to see more of you at these type events.  Watch your VFW Post Calendar for upcoming events.

GOLF TOURNAMENT, SEP 9th:  Is our primary money-maker for the year.  PLEASE contact a business or person who may want to contribute something to the tournament, or be a hole-sponsor.  See Allen or Dan for forms or how you can help.  Attached are the forms necessary.

BURIAL/INTERRMENT:  Everyone of us has a reservation in this category.  Some will choose to be buried/interred  (by interred I mean cremation ashes) in a U.S. National Cemetery.  For those that choose this route, there are certain things that need to be done

NOTE:  There are different requirements for a U.S. National Cemetery and Arlington (Arlington belongs to the Department of the Army).  We will talk about Arlington next month.

It is always best if you have a funeral parlor pre-selected, pre-coordinated, pre-paid for and you know which National Cemetery you want to be laid to rest at. Your funeral parlor will make the receipt/burial/interment arrangements when you pass and get you to the National Cemetery of your choice.  There are some National Cemetery’s that are CLOSED because they are FULL.  Make sure you pick one that is still in the receiving business.  ALL 3 in S.C. are open.

You can expedite things by completing now, a VA Form 40-10007 PRENEED BURIAL DETERMINATION and mailing it, with supporting documentation, to:  National Cemetery Scheduling Office  PO Box 510543 St. Louis MO 63151. (they have, for the time-being, stopped accepting electronic and fax receipts of this document.)

HINT:  If you keep getting a reject when trying to open the 40-10007, use 40-40007 and it will open the required document for you.

You will be buried/interred the same day you enter the National Cemetery.  Your survivor’s should have set a date with the funeral parlor and they, in turn, will coordinate with the cemetery. Your survivor’s CANNOT show up at the gates and want you taken care of.  It must be done through a Funeral Parlor.  Your survivor’s CANNOT pre-pick a location, your eternal resting place will be determined the day you pass through the cemetery gates. All will be taken to a ‘committal service shelter’ where final remembrances are made. Only the deceased goes to the grave-site/interment place.

..Opening & closing of grave, or placement of ashes in above ground vault or columbarium.

…Govt. furnished grave liner

…Perpetual care of grave-site or urn facility

... Headstone or marker with inscription

… Burial flag

…Presidential Memorial Certificate

…If a Disable Veteran, some/most transportation costs for deceased may be paid by VA.

…Military Honors…To be coordinated with funeral parlor who will coordinate with appropriate branch of service.  OR family can arrange something with local military.

EVERY spouse/prior spouse of a military member is entitled to be buried/interred with their military member.

FACT:  There is one National Cemetery that has the veteran and THIRTEEN (13) prior spouses interred with him.

SUPPORTING POST FUNCTIONS:  The calendar is filled with activities.  Come out and join us and bring a neighbor or friend (they do not have to be VFW members). The Post offers some of the  cheapest meals in town.  Check the Post Calendar for what’s being offered month to month.

Commander Camera would like to meet YOU at one of our many monthly events or at the Monthly Business Meeting.  If you are a stranger to the meeting, come out (on the second Saturday of the month at 11 AM) and see what your post is all about.

Got some spare time, there are plenty of ways you could volunteer some of that time in supporting YOUR Post.
